The next meeting of the MCCSC Parent-Teacher Advisory Council for Special Education will be Monday, May 10th at 6:30 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church (on the Bypass, just north of 3rd Street and the Starbucks/Bucceto's strip mall), while the library is undergoing renovations.

Presented by the Arc of Indiana. Hosted by the Monroe County Community School Corporation
Time: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Where: Bloomington High School South, Large Group Room

Is your child about ready to leave high school? Does your child have a disability? Do you know about the Medicaid Waiver Programs? Attend this informational meeting and learn about the different Waiver programs. You may also bring your most recent evaluations, IFSP, IEP, and complete your application for the Waiver during the session. Family Advocates will be on hand to help you complete your application.

A staff member from the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities will be inattendance to take your applications and answer any questions about the application process. Stacey Stillinger from About Special Kids will also be present information about their services.

"Inspiring Abilities Resource Fair"
Presented by Down Syndrome Family Connection and hosted by the Learning Tree Preschool and Kindergarten at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church
Time: 9:30am - 12 noon
Where: Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers Road, Bloomington, IN

A family-friendly concert will begin at 10:30am by Leonardo, a musician who has a brother with Down syndrome. Last year, there were over 25 exhibitors at the fair, and we expect an even bigger turnout this year! This is a great opportunity to learn of the programs and services available to persons with disabilities and their families in the B-town area. So, help us celebrate Disability Awareness Month, and attend this fun event presented by the Down Syndrome Family Connection.

Forum on Proposed Changes to State Teaching License Requirements
Time: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Place: Room 1A, Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington

Event: The October PTACSE meeting will be a forum to hear more about Indiana's proposed new educator licensing system. Please come to hear about these important changes!

Members of the community are invited to learn about REPA (Revisions for Educator Preparation and Accountability), the controversial major changes proposed for Indiana K-12 teacher licensing.

Speakers will include Dr. Jill Shedd, Assistant Dean for Teacher Education at the School of Education at Indiana University, and educators from MCCSC.

About Special Kids Workshop: Roadmap to Special Education: Laws and Process
Time: 8:30am to 4:30pm
Where: Indiana Institute on Disability and Community

This training, combining the Article 7 and IEP training, is an all day training tha offers basic information about special education laws and regulations for Indiana children ages 3-21. In addition, this training provides information on how to prepare for a case conference and write an IEP. This training is a great opportunity for family members and professionals who advocate for children with a disability or serious chronic illness.

Monday, September 14:
Panel Discussion: Back-to-school transition strategies for students with disabilities

Time: 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.

Place: Monroe County Public Library

Event: The Monroe County CHADD will be hosting this teacher panel with a mix of elementary, middle school, and high school teachers to discuss transition and back-to-school issues for students with disabilities. The panel members will talk a bit about their favorite "back to school" transition strategies for kids with AD/HD and other disabilities, followed by a casual discussion and Q&A with the panel and parents.

MCCSC's first Parent Forum for the 2009-10 school year: "Transition IEPs for Students age 14 and up"
Presented by Dr. Teresa Grossi, Director of the Center on Community Living and Careers, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Indiana University

Monday, June 29:
STAR (Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research) INFORMATION SESSION
MCCSC is offering an information session on STAR--Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research for parents on Monday, June 29 from 5:00 to 6:00 at Bloomington High School South cafeteria. The STAR trainers will present an overview of the program and answer parents’ questions. Selected MCCSC teachers and staff, including teachers in the Community Based classrooms, are participating in an exciting opportunity this summer with trainers from STAR in Portland, Oregon.

The strategies in STAR meet the criteria for scientifically-based skill-based methods under No Child Left Behind for teaching children with autism. These same direct instruction strategies are also effective for students with other developmental disabilities.

FINANCIAL PLANNING SEMINAR FOR FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Down Syndrome Famly Connection will host a financial planning seminar led by Gordon Homes, a financial advisor with MetDESK (MetLife's Division of Estate planning foecial Kids). To read more about Mr. Homes, see his website.

Workshop: "A Walk Through the IEP"

For families of students receiving special education services, this workshop will discuss all the components of the Individualized Education Plan. This session will go over ISTART 7, Indiana's electronic IEP, and the recent changes in Article 7 that affect the IEP. Come to this IN*SOURCE workshop to learn more.
